China's ceramics capital — one city supplying both the dinner table and the bathroom for 160+ export markets.
Chaozhou, on the Han River in eastern Guangdong, has held the official title of "China Ceramics Capital" since 2004 and is the country's single largest production base for both daily-use porcelain and ceramic sanitaryware. The cluster is not one industrial park but a string of specialised towns: Guxiang and Fengxi for tableware, mugs and decorative ceramics, Fengtang for toilets, basins and washroom ceramics. Several thousand ceramic and sanitaryware enterprises operate here, with an annual output value in the tens of billions of RMB and exports reaching more than 160 countries and regions.
The depth of the supply chain is what separates Chaozhou from a generic ceramics factory town. Clay bodies, glazes, decal printing, plaster mould making, kiln furniture, carton and polyfoam packaging, and sanitaryware fittings are all produced within a 30-minute drive. That means a new shape can go from sketch to fired sample in two to three weeks, and a full container can be assembled with matching accessories without the buyer managing five separate suppliers. Gas-fired tunnel and shuttle kilns are standard, with automated glaze lines and pressure-casting for sanitaryware now common in the larger plants.
For buyers, Chaozhou offers the widest price-to-quality ladder in the world of ceramics: the same city can supply promotional stoneware at a few dollars a set and hotel-grade alumina porcelain that passes a 10,000-cycle dishwasher test. The practical risk is quality dispersion between small workshops and export-grade factories, plus moisture-related breakage in sea freight — both are controllable with factory screening, pre-shipment inspection and proper drop-test packaging.
Trial orders typically start at 500–1,000 pcs per shape for tableware and 20–50 sets per model for sanitaryware; mixed-model containers are normal. Lead time is 25–40 days for stock shapes and 40–55 days for new moulds, plus 10–15 days for sea freight. We strongly recommend pre-shipment inspection with a moisture-meter check, carton drop test and a 5% glaze-surface audit — crazing and pinholes are the most common claim driver in this category.
