China's shoe capital and one of its largest eyewear bases — two consumer categories under one sourcing roof.
Wenzhou is China's best-known footwear city. The industry is spread across Lucheng, Ouhai, Yongjia and Rui'an, with several thousand shoe enterprises producing leather dress shoes, casual footwear, sneakers, boots, sandals and children's shoes. Annual output runs into the hundreds of millions of pairs, and Wenzhou shoes reach more than 150 countries. The city earned its reputation in the 1990s as a low-cost producer and has since moved up: today a meaningful share of mid-market European private-label leather footwear is made here, alongside very large volume programmes for Africa, the Middle East and CIS markets.
Eyewear grew out of the same entrepreneurial ecosystem. Wenzhou is one of China's three main eyewear bases, concentrated in Lucheng and Ouhai, with strengths in metal and acetate optical frames, reading glasses and sunglasses. Frame stamping, barrel plating, acetate tumbling, lens edging and coating, hinge assembly and case manufacture are all present locally, so a complete programme — frame, lens, pouch, case, cleaning cloth, retail box — can be sourced without leaving the city.
For buyers, Wenzhou's value is breadth of price and style with credible OEM execution: moulds, lasts, colour matching and private-label packaging are routine, and sampling cycles are short. The traps are material substitution (bonded leather described as full-grain, acrylic described as CR-39) and inconsistent sizing, which is why specification sheets, size-set confirmation and third-party lab testing should be fixed before bulk production.
Trial orders: 300–600 pairs per style/colour for shoes (mixed sizes per size set), 300–600 pcs per frame for eyewear. Lead time 30–45 days for shoes after approval, 25–35 days for frames with stock lenses. Always confirm a physical size set, request upper-material lab identification for leather claims, and run a 100% pull-test and hinge-cycle check on eyewear before shipment.
