Xinji is the largest leather garment production and trading base in China and one of the biggest in Asia. The city's leather industry cluster includes an estimated 1,000+ garment manufacturers plus tanneries, fur processors, lining and trim suppliers, and the Xinji International Leather City wholesale complex, which functions as the reference market for Chinese leather outerwear prices. Output is dominated by sheepskin and lambskin jackets, shearling coats and fur-trimmed outerwear, with annual processing volumes in the tens of millions of pieces across the cluster.
The vertical depth is what makes Xinji competitive: raw sheepskins are tanned and dyed locally (chrome and vegetable/re-tan), then cut, sewn and finished within the same county. That means a buyer can specify an exact Pantone dye lot, a 0.7 mm aniline lambskin, a particular shearling pile length, or a hand-finished antique wash and have it sampled in 10–15 days. Pattern-making and grading for EU/US size runs is routine, and many factories keep dedicated lines for small-batch fashion buyers.
The category risk is compliance and consistency rather than capability. Leather is a natural material, so shade variation between dye lots, thickness tolerance and stretch marks must be accepted in the spec. For EU/North American buyers, chrome VI (< 3 mg/kg), azo dyes, formaldehyde and REACH restricted substances should be tested per shipment, and any fur trim needs a clear species declaration. Trial orders typically start at 100–300 pcs per style and color, or 50 pcs for sample-level runs on premium shearling. Bulk lead time is 30–45 days after approval, longer for custom tanning or hand-finishing. QC must include a hide inspection under daylight (shade, scars, thickness gauge at 5 points), seam and stitch density check, zipper/hardware cycle test, and a batch-level chemical test report — never accept a test report that is more than 12 months old or covers a different dye lot.
