China's towel town — roughly one in three Chinese towels is woven in Gaoyang County.
Gaoyang County is the largest towel and home-textile production base in northern China and, by output, one of the two dominant towel clusters in the country. The county is home to several thousand weaving, dyeing, printing and finishing enterprises, and industry associations estimate that around a third of China's towel output by volume originates here. Product range covers the full ladder from 350 gsm promotional face cloths to 700 gsm five-star hotel bath sheets, plus bathrobes, bed linen and throw blankets.
What makes Gaoyang efficient is that weaving, dyeing, printing and sewing sit in the same industrial parks. Yarn is sourced from Xinjiang and imported Egyptian cotton through local traders, woven on air-jet and rapier looms, then piece-dyed, yarn-dyed or reactive-printed on site. Jacquard and dobby capability is strong — logo jacquard borders, damask panels and custom selvedge names are standard requests rather than special projects, which is why hotel groups and private-label retailers source here.
The buyer's upside is price and customization at moderate volumes; the buyer's risk is absorbency and colour fastness cutting. Two towels at the same gsm can differ by 20% in absorbency depending on yarn twist and dyeing, and cheap reactive dyes fail after 20 washes. Specify gsm, yarn count, twist, and require a wash-test report — those are the three levers that determine whether a towel feels like a hotel towel or a car wipe.
Trial orders typically start at 500–1,000 pcs per color for stock sizes, and 2,000–3,000 pcs for custom jacquard borders or special dye lots. Lead time is 20–30 days for greige-based programs and 30–40 days for jacquard or yarn-dyed work. QC should verify actual gsm by cutting and weighing a 10×10 cm swatch, check colour fastness to washing (≥ 4级, ISO 105-C06) and rubbing (≥ 4), measure shrinkage after 3 washes (≤ 5%), and confirm absorbency by sink test (≤ 5 seconds wet-out).
