The wig capital of the world — roughly four in ten human-hair wigs sold globally are made in one Henan city.
Xuchang, in central Henan, is the world's largest production and trading base for wigs and hair extensions. Industry estimates put the city's share at around 40% of global wig output, with hair products accounting for roughly 60% of China's total exports in the category and annual export value above US$2 billion. The cluster counts several thousand manufacturers, trading houses and workshops, and a workforce in the hundreds of thousands — many of them home-based sewers and knotting specialists in the villages around Lingjing and Yuzhou.
The chain starts with raw hair collected and sorted by length and cuticle direction, then moves through acid washing, wefting, ventilating (hand-knotting into lace), bleaching knots, colouring, styling and packaging. Xuchang's advantage is that each of these steps is a separate specialist trade within a few kilometres, so a factory can buy a 13x4 HD frontal from one workshop, bundles from another and a custom cap from a third. Hand-knotting capacity is the real bottleneck worldwide, and it is concentrated here.
For a brand, this means genuine customisation — density, lace type, cap size, hair origin, colour and curl pattern can all be specified, and stock items ship in days. The risks are equally specific: mislabelled hair origin, cuticle-stripped 'remy' hair that tangles after two washes, and lace that tears at the hairline. We verify by pull-testing, wet-combing and measuring actual density and length on a sample from every batch before bulk production.
Stock wigs ship from 1–10 pcs per SKU, which makes sampling cheap; custom specification (density, lace, cap size, logo label) starts at 30–50 pcs per SKU. Lead time is 3–7 days for stock and 15–25 days for custom production, longer for hand-knotted full lace. Verify hair origin with a burn and cuticle test, measure density and length on a random sample, wet-comb for 5 minutes to check shedding, and inspect lace at 3× magnification for torn knots. We do all four on every pre-shipment inspection.
