China's nonwoven capital — over a thousand plants turning polypropylene roll goods into masks, gowns, wipes and disposable textiles.
Xiantao, a county-level city on the Han River in central Hubei, is China's largest nonwoven products manufacturing base. The cluster is estimated to produce around 40% of the country's nonwoven finished goods, with over a thousand manufacturing and supporting enterprises and an annual output value above RMB 60 billion. Pengchang town, twenty minutes from the city centre, is the densest single concentration — a continuous stretch of mask lines, gown-sewing floors, roll-goods plants and carton printers.
The chain here runs from polymer to pallet. Spunbond, SSS, SMS, meltblown and spunlace lines supply fabric in 25–100 gsm directly to converting floors next door; ultrasonic welding machines, elastic, nose wire, poly bags, sterilisation services (EO and irradiation) and ISO 13485 documentation support are all local. That proximity is why Xiantao can quote a 3-ply mask at volumes that inland converters elsewhere cannot match, and why changeovers between mask, cap and gown production take hours rather than weeks.
The catch is that quality and documentation vary enormously between a 20-line export factory and a workshop selling into the domestic wholesale market. Medical claims require EN 14683 or ASTM F2100 test reports from accredited labs, and CE marking now needs an EU-notified body certificate for sterile or medical-device claims. We screen factories on their own test reports, not brochures, and every order is inspected for BFE, differential pressure and weld strength before shipment.
Trial orders run 20,000–50,000 pcs for converted goods and 1 tonne (or one pallet) for roll goods; many factories accept one 20ft mixed container across 5–8 SKUs. Lead time is 15–25 days for stock specifications, 30–40 days for custom print or size. Non-negotiables: an accredited test report issued within twelve months (BFE, ΔP, splash resistance), a declaration of the exact fabric gsm and layer construction, and weld-strength spot checks at AQL 2.5. For medical claims, confirm the EU notified-body certificate number before paying a deposit.
