China's hardware capital — power tools, garden equipment and household metal goods from one compact city.
Yongkang, in central Zhejiang, is officially known as China's Hardware Capital and is one of the densest concentrations of metal-working and small-appliance manufacturing anywhere. The city and its neighbouring towns — Wuyi, Jinhua's Jindong district and Pan'an — form a belt of several thousand factories producing power tools, garden machinery, ladders, BBQ grills, door locks, vacuum flasks, weighing scales, scooters and kitchen appliances. Local authorities count annual output in the hundreds of billions of RMB, with a large share exported.
What makes Yongkang work is the component ecosystem. Motors, switches, gears, injection-moulded housings, die-cast aluminium parts, batteries, chargers, blades and packaging are all made within a short drive. A new cordless tool platform can be developed with local motor and battery partners, tested, and brought to market in a single season. This is also why the city became a global supplier of complete DIY and garden ranges for European and North American retailers, and why many well-known brands source here under OEM and ODM arrangements.
Commercially, Yongkang delivers excellent value at mid-volume and above, with strong capability in retail-ready packaging, colour-box design and battery platform engineering. The risks are certification and component honesty — a claimed 20 V battery may be 18 V nominal, and brushless-motor claims should be verified on the bench. For any programme with lithium batteries, UN38.3, MSDS and CE/EMC documentation must be reviewed before booking, not after.
Trial orders 200–500 pcs for tools and appliances, 100–300 for ladders and grills. Lead time 30–40 days for stock models, 45–60 days for new tooling. For anything with a lithium battery, require UN38.3, MSDS, IEC 62133 cell report and CE/EMC test files before deposit; for tools, run a 30-minute load/heat test and check motor and switch branding on samples.
