China's down-jacket capital — where a third of the country's puffer production is cut and sewn.
Changshu, on the Yangtze south bank near Suzhou, is China's largest down-garment manufacturing base. The city's Baimao and Guyi districts and the surrounding towns host several thousand down-apparel factories — from 30-machine workshops to vertically integrated groups running their own down washing, fabric lamination and down-proof shell weaving. Industry estimates put Changshu at roughly one third of China's down-jacket output and a dominant share of its down-jacket exports.
The cluster is anchored by a complete down supply chain: raw down washing and sorting (white duck, grey duck, white goose), fill-power testing labs, down-proof nylon and polyester shell weaving, calendering and lamination, baffle-sewing lines, seam-sealing and, increasingly, seamless 'welded' construction using hot-air tape instead of stitching. Down itself is traded locally in graded lots, so a factory can specify 90/10 white duck down at 700 fill power and have it tested in town before a single panel is cut.
For buyers, this is the place to build a down program at a landed cost that European or North American production cannot approach — but the specification traps are real. Fill power, down content, fill weight per panel and shell down-proofing are the four variables that decide whether a jacket performs or leaks feathers in the shop. Every one of them must be written into the PO and verified by a fill-power test and a down-leakage test, not left to a verbal 'high quality'.
Trial order: 300–500 pcs per style/colourway, 100–200 pcs for premium 800 FP or seamless lines. Lead time 60–75 days for first production, 45–60 days for repeats; book winter capacity by June–July. Require a fill-power test report (IDFB method), down-content analysis, and a down-leakage test on the finished shell; we inspect stitching, baffle evenness, zipper function and label compliance before packing.
