Sourcing Cluster Guide · Industrial
China's stainless-steel town — scrap-to-finished metal in one industrial chain.
Dainan, in Xinghua north of Taizhou, is China's best-known stainless-steel processing town. What began as a scrap-sorting village in the 1980s is now a cluster of well over a thousand melting, rolling, drawing and fabrication enterprises handling an estimated several million tonnes of stainless steel a year. It is one of the country's largest stainless scrap trading and re-melting centres, and a major source of wire rod, bar, strip, tube and finished fasteners.
The cluster's unusual feature is vertical integration within a few square kilometres: induction-furnace and AOD melting, continuous casting of billets, hot rolling, cold drawing, bright annealing, pickling, and then downstream forming — fasteners, flanges, mesh, kitchenware and valve bodies. Grades run from commodity 201 and 304 to 316L, 321, 310S and duplex 2205. Because melt shops, drawing mills and finishing plants are separate specialists, buyers can source semi-finished material and finished parts from the same town and have them metallurgically matched.
That integration gives importers landed-cost advantages on 304 and 316L long products in particular. It also means grade substitution is a real risk: 201 sold as 304, or 304 sold as 316L, is the classic failure mode in this market. Buyers should require mill test certificates traceable to heat number, commission independent PMI (positive material identification) on arrival, and never accept a grade claim without a spectro report.
Trial order: 1–5 t for bar, wire and tube; 1 container (20–25 t) for coil and sheet; 500–2,000 pcs for fasteners and flanges. Lead time 3–7 days ex-stock, 20–30 days for mill rolling. Always require MTC to EN 10204 3.1 with heat number, and book third-party PMI plus dimensional check; we verify grade, tolerance and surface before loading.
