Sourcing Cluster Guide · Home & Living
China's optical lens capital — roughly seven of every ten lenses made in the country start here.
Danyang is the largest eyewear manufacturing base in China and one of the largest lens clusters in the world. The city and its surrounding towns host several thousand optical companies — lens casters, coating houses, frame moulders, assemblers and accessory makers — and produce an estimated 70% of China's optical lens output, with a substantial share of global volume shipped as semi-finished blanks and finished Rx lenses. Daily capacity across the cluster runs into the millions of pieces.
The depth is in the process chain rather than in any single factory. Monomer casting and injection, hard-coating lines, vacuum AR coating chambers, tinting and photochromic curing, edging and drilling, and lens-meter QC all exist as separate specialist businesses inside the city. A buyer can therefore source a 1.56 blue-cut lens from one plant, send it to a dedicated coating house for a 12-layer hydrophobic stack, and have it edged and mounted at a third — with competitive pricing at each step because each step has dozens of bidders.
For importers, the practical advantage is range: index 1.56 through 1.74, photochromic, polarized, blue-light and progressive, all from one coordinate. The practical risk is coating durability and power accuracy, which are not visible in a sample photo. Buyers should specify the coating stack by layer count and test method, request a lens-meter report per batch, and treat unverified 'super-hydrophobic' claims sceptically.
Trial order: 1,000–3,000 pairs per SKU for finished lenses, 500 pairs for specialized progressives or 1.74. Lead time 15–25 days for stock powers, 25–35 days for custom coating or Rx. Ask for a per-batch lens-meter (power/cylinder/axis) report, a coating adhesion test per ISO 8980-4 and a 200-cycle abrasion result; we verify dioptre tolerance and coating defect rate before shipment.
