China's ceramic capital for underglaze five-colour porcelain — and the country's largest production base for hotel and restaurant tableware.
Liling, in eastern Hunan, is one of China's three historic porcelain centres and the acknowledged home of underglaze five-colour decoration (youxia wucai), a national intangible cultural heritage. The city's ceramic cluster runs to well over a thousand enterprises and supporting plants, with an annual output value estimated in the tens of billions of RMB. Liling is unusual in that it combines craft credibility with genuine industrial scale: alongside artist studios there are continuous tunnel kilns producing millions of hotel plates and bowls a month.
The supply chain here is organised around volume tableware and technical ceramics. Local mines supply the feldspar, quartz and clay; body preparation, high-pressure casting, automatic jiggering, roller-kiln firing at 1,300 °C, underglaze and inglaze decal printing, and automatic packing lines all sit within the Liling Ceramic Industrial Park. The same industrial base also produces high-voltage insulators and chemical packing, which is why kiln control and dimensional tolerance discipline here are stronger than in purely decorative ceramic towns.
That combination makes Liling the right source when a buyer needs consistent, chip-resistant, dishwasher-proof tableware at volume — hotelware, foodservice ranges, supermarket promotional sets — rather than one-off art pieces. The trade-off is design flexibility: minimums are higher and hand-painted variation is limited. We position Liling for programmes from 2,000 pieces upward, with a signed golden sample, dimensional report and per-batch leach test as standard.
Volume is the model here: expect 1,000–2,000 pcs per shape for decorated ranges, 500 pcs for plain white. Lead time is 30–40 days after golden-sample approval. Because underglaze decoration is fired under the glaze, colour fastness is excellent, but body colour and dimensional tolerance still vary batch to batch — we require a dimensional and weight report plus a lead/cadmium leach certificate to FDA 21 CFR and LFGB with each shipment, and a 100% light-table inspection for pinholes and crazing.
