China's largest solid-wood furniture cluster — over 10,000 factories turning imported hardwood into export-grade bedroom and living room sets.
Nankang, a district of Ganzhou in southern Jiangxi, is the largest solid-wood furniture production base in China. The cluster has grown from a handful of workshops in the 1990s into a market town with well over 10,000 furniture manufacturers and supporting suppliers, and an annual output value estimated at over RMB 250 billion. Its exhibition and wholesale centre covers several million square metres, and the surrounding townships specialise by product — beds and bedroom sets in one area, dining and sofa lines in another, panel and hardware suppliers in a third.
The depth of the supply chain is unusual for an inland city. Roughly 80% of the timber used here is imported — African sapele and bintangor, Russian birch and pine, North American oak and walnut, Southeast Asian rubberwood — and arrives through Ganzhou International Inland Port, a dry port with direct rail links to Shenzhen Yantian and Guangzhou Nansha. That means a factory can receive a container of logs or sawn timber, kiln-dry it to 8–12% moisture content, machine, sand, lacquer and pack a finished bedroom set without the wood ever leaving the province. Hardware, hinges, slides, lacquer and packaging are all sourced within a 30 km radius.
For buyers the appeal is genuine solid wood at panel-furniture prices, with the full range of finishes and hardware upgrades available. The friction points are consistency and documentation: thousands of small workshops quote fast but vary in kiln discipline and lacquer quality, and only a minority hold FSC chain-of-custody or CARB Phase 2 certification. That is why we pre-qualify factories by kiln records, hardware brand and finish adhesion tests before any order is placed, and inspect every container at loading.
Trial orders typically start at 20–50 sets per model, or one mixed 40HQ of 3–5 models; many factories accept 10 sets for a first run with a small set-up charge. Lead time is 30–45 days after deposit and artwork approval, plus 7–10 days if a custom finish or size is required. Because solid wood moves with humidity, insist on a kiln certificate (8–12% MC), a 48-hour lacquer adhesion and impact test, and a loaded-container photo report; we also recommend a third-party inspection at 100% pre-pack for bedrooms and dining sets.
